Rehoming Resources

Home

Here are some FREE programs to help with running a rehoming website, and the best web site deal we know of.

In the fullness of time we plan to do a page about setting up a web site, including photo processing. For now, here are the ingredients...

Function
Program
Notes
Website host Nameroute Only £14 for 2 years with your own domain name and matching e-mail address, 10Mb of web space which is plenty. For a charity you should use a ".org.uk" name in theory, though this rule is often broken. Good search facilities for finding an available name.

Photo editing

free

Photofiltre

You may have adequate software with your camera, otherwise this does everything you need. Install your firewall first, though (see below).

When you've installed Photofiltre, you'll only need to learn to use these tools:
Select (drag a rectangle)
Crop (discard surplus scenery)
Adjust Levels (Highlights, to brighten a dull or dark image)
Gamma (to make a dark face visible)
Resize (e.g.to make it 350 pixels wide) and
Clone Stamp (to remove unwanted elements like a tight lead).

Contacts and notes AZZ Cardfile, an advanced but cheap (£10) program to keep contacts, web addresses, passwords etc. Like a paper card file but much better. Searchable, dials for you if you have a modem, and can be password protected. Good for busy rehomers with a lot of adopters, dogs, trainers etc to keep track of..
Web page editor

We're still looking for a good one, but you can use Micrsoft Word to get started. Put tables in to hold the photos etc., and use Save as Web Page, or to make it really easy Open an existing web page.

File Transfer program

free

ftp explorer FTP is File Transfer Protocol, the standard way of uploading files to a web server. Most web site editing programs have ftp built in, but if not you can use this. If you're using Word you can use this to upload the files,or Microsoft's own publishing program.

Anti-virus

free

AVG If you're spending any time at all on the web you need anti-virus. Ignore the monthly update default and set it to update it every day.

Personal firwall

free

Zonealarm You also need a personal firewall to stop internet baddies looking in your computer while you're online.

Anti-spam

free

Mailwasher Eventually with your e-mail you'll get spam (junk e-mail). Mailwasher will let you bin spam before you actually download the e-mails - important because spammers can tell if you open it, then they know it's a live e-mail address and you'll get more. It's also quite good at spotting e-mail viruses.

Anti-spyware

free

Spybot

Ad-aware

This protects you from "malware" which installs itself on your computer and sends out information about you, or changes some system settings that can expose your pc to the wrong people.

This will help get rid of "spyware" that installs itself on your computer and tells marketing companies about you. Spybot finds some things that Ad-aware misses.
